Client: Generation 2000 Inks (G2K Inks)
Service(s): Claims Validation
Description:
In response to a request from a large retailer, Generation 2000 Inks, a Quebec-based manufacturer of inks used in packaging applications, brought in TerraVeritas to verify the VOC and metals content of a line of printing inks. As a part of the verification process, product from the manufacturing facility was sampled and physical testing of the inks was commissioned. The material importance of the claim was assessed and the claims language was screened against the FTC’s and Industry Canada’s environmental marketing guides. For Generation 2000 Inks’ ECO Series 2000 and ECO Process lines of inks, TerraVeritas validated the claim of “Printing ink contains less than 3% by weight of VOCs, and less than 50 parts per million of cadmium, chromium, lead and mercury, metals identified by CONEG as posing environmental and health hazards”.

Offsets can now be included with a variety of online purchases (airline tickets and computers, for example). There are also an abundance of online carbon calculators and organizations selling RECs and offsets available to anyone with Internet access.
Couple the ease of access with the fact that the offsets and renewable energy credit markets are largely unregulated - no single framework exists to ensure that the purchase of offsets or RECs actually reflects reductions in greenhouse gas emissions --- and the recipe seems ripe for greenwashing. With the recent crack down from the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Canadian Competition Bureau (CBC) on false or misleading environmental claims being made on products, TerraVeritas is noticing an increase in organizations looking for third party verification and validation of their environmental claims. Over the last 12 months, the FTC and CBC have laid charges related to claims of biodegradable, “environmental safety and soundness”, eco-friendly, organically-grown, fuel efficiency and Energy Star listings.
