Consumers are being inundated with opportunities to become carbon neutral and/or to offset portions of their daily activities. Offsets can now be included with a variety of online purchases (airline tickets and computers, for example). There are also an abundance of online carbon calculators and organizations selling RECs and offsets available to anyone with Internet access.

Couple the ease of access with the fact that the offsets and renewable energy credit markets are largely unregulated - no single framework exists to ensure that the purchase of offsets or RECs actually reflects reductions in greenhouse gas emissions --- and the recipe seems ripe for greenwashing. Sellars Towels “Verified”
TerraVeritas recently appeared in the Feb/March 2010 issue of GoPro Magazine, an American government purchasing publication, as part of a Sellars GREENXTM Towels ad. Sellars Wipers and Sorbents has been one of the first TerraVeritas clients to proactively promote their validated claim in a print advertisement.

TerraVeritas worked with Sellars to validate its claim of “made with 40% post-consumer recycled fiber (based only on the product's fiber content, which represents a minimum of 85% of the total product weight)”.

World Wildlife Fund
Actively supported by over 150,000 Canadians, World Wildlife Fund (WWF)-Canada is one of the country’s leading conservation organizations. Their mission is to stop the degradation of the planet’s natural environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with the environment.

WWF-Canada sought the assistance of TerraVeritas, a wholly owner subsidiary of TerraChoice, to ensure that all products sold through their online store demonstrate a legitimate and tangible commitment to environmental and sustainability issues. TerraVeritas partnered with WWF-Canada to develop a product and service “green screen” and validation program for their online store. This work tied in nicely with the organization’s mission and also helped WWF-Canada reduce the potential for perceived “greenwashing”.

The product and service “green screen” developed by TerraVeritas sets minimum environmental standards across the entire life cycle of various product categories that must be met for inclusion in the online store. Every product available for sale on the WWF-Canada website will have passed the TerraVeritas “green screen”.

With the recent crack down from the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Canadian Competition Bureau (CBC) on false or misleading environmental claims being made on products, TerraVeritas is noticing an increase in organizations looking for third party verification and validation of their environmental claims. Over the last 12 months, the FTC and CBC have laid charges related to claims of biodegradable, “environmental safety and soundness”, eco-friendly, organically-grown, fuel efficiency and Energy Star listings.
