Client: Sanitation Strategies LLC
Service(s): Claims Validation
Description:
Sanitation Strategies LLC, a proven leader in providing hygienic solutions to the life sciences and food processing industries, has developed two environmentally preferred, phosphate-free detergents designed to remove fats, oils and other organic soil from animal cages, racks, trays and carts.
Sanitation Strategies introduced the ECO 101 Alkaline Cage Wash and ECO 201 Acid Cage Wash in the Fall of 2009. These specially blended products complement their comprehensive chemical product line. Sanitation Strategies sought the services of TerraVeritas to validate the accuracy of the environmental claims that these products are made with biodegradable, organic ingredients.
TerraVeritas evaluated manufacturing documentation, supply chain integrity and overall claims-based calculations. In having the claim validated by a third party, Sanitation Strategies ensured accuracy and avoided the potential for perceived ‘greenwashing’. For the ECO 101 Alkaline Cage Wash and the ECO 201 Acid Cage Wash, TerraVeritas validated a claim of “Made with organic ingredients that are biodegradable (in an aerobic aquatic environment, as per raw material data sheets that indicate testing according to one of the following: OECD 301B/D/E/F, 302B, or 303A)”.

Couple the ease of access with the fact that the offsets and renewable energy credit markets are largely unregulated - no single framework exists to ensure that the purchase of offsets or RECs actually reflects reductions in greenhouse gas emissions --- and the recipe seems ripe for greenwashing. With the recent crack down from the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Canadian Competition Bureau (CBC) on false or misleading environmental claims being made on products, TerraVeritas is noticing an increase in organizations looking for third party verification and validation of their environmental claims. Over the last 12 months, the FTC and CBC have laid charges related to claims of biodegradable, “environmental safety and soundness”, eco-friendly, organically-grown, fuel efficiency and Energy Star listings.
