Service(s): Claims Validation and LEED Criteria Review

Description:

Claims Validation: Sellars Wipers and Sorbents, Inc., a leading manufacturer of industrial wipers, came to TerraVeritas to validate a marketing claim prior to a product launch. Sellars produces a high-performance based line of double recreped wipers that contain post-consumer recycled fibers. Before promoting this fact, they first wanted to ensure that any environmental claims being made were accurate.

Sellars partnered with TerraVeritas to substantiate the claim regarding post-consumer recycled fibers, to ensure its accuracy, and to avoid the potential for perceived “greenwashing”. TerraVeritas evaluated manufacturing related documentation, supply chain integrity, and overall claims-based calculations. We also screened the claim’s language and underlying intent against government environmental marketing guidelines, and ensured the claim is relevant, specific, easily understood and not in any way misleading. For Sellars’ GREENX™ line of DRC towels, TerraVeritas validated the claim of “Made with 40% post-consumer recycled fiber** (based only on the product's fiber content, which represents a minimum of 85% of the total product weight)”.

LEED Criteria Review: TerraVeritas was retained by Sellars Wipers and Sorbents, Inc., a leading manufacturer of industrial wipers, to review the suite of LEED 2009 Standards to determine how DRC wipers, as a broader product category, could help building managers and/or architects in obtaining building certification in the LEED Rating Program, and which specific environmental attributes any DRC wipers would need in order to help earn this certification. After determining how DRC could help people obtain building certification in the LEED Rating Program, TerraVeritas helped formulate the language for Sellars to use within a broader collateral piece to promote these opportunities.

Consumers are being inundated with opportunities to become carbon neutral and/or to offset portions of their daily activities. Offsets can now be included with a variety of online purchases (airline tickets and computers, for example). There are also an abundance of online carbon calculators and organizations selling RECs and offsets available to anyone with Internet access.

Couple the ease of access with the fact that the offsets and renewable energy credit markets are largely unregulated - no single framework exists to ensure that the purchase of offsets or RECs actually reflects reductions in greenhouse gas emissions --- and the recipe seems ripe for greenwashing. With the recent crack down from the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Canadian Competition Bureau (CBC) on false or misleading environmental claims being made on products, TerraVeritas is noticing an increase in organizations looking for third party verification and validation of their environmental claims. Over the last 12 months, the FTC and CBC have laid charges related to claims of biodegradable, “environmental safety and soundness”, eco-friendly, organically-grown, fuel efficiency and Energy Star listings.
